QHY163M Hanging Downloads and Lines

QHY163M Hanging Downloads and Lines
« on: January 22, 2020, 08:06:37 AM »
I have owned my QHY163M for a couple of years and used it with USB2 with occasional garbled lines and hangs. I came to realize that the camera just doesn't work reliably without being connected to a powered hub with USB2. I had tried using the camera when it was new with USB 3 and it never worked reliably enough to get any use out of it that way so I resumed using USB 2 in hopes this was a driver issue. Well, here I am several years later and the USB3 issue still exists. I discovered this after upgrading to a new mount and other gear. I tried new USB 3 cables, usb 3 cables directly to pc, latest drivers, USB traffic to 0,20,30,60, new USB 3 hubs, different computers, different power supplies. Nothing fixes the problems with USB 3 hanging downloads and garbled frames. What's super annoying about this is that it will work one night but not the next morning or next night. You just cannot rely on USB 3 with this camera.
While reading through these forums over the years, I have seen many others with this problem but no consistent reason for the issue. I myself commented here in the past after checking the ribbon cables as suggested by Dr. Qiu. I would think that fixed the issue only to have it return a short while later.
Recently, I came across a post where Dr. Qiu  stated: "If the usb cable and computer socket is confirmed no problem by use another one. There do have a possible that the USB3.0 wire inside the camera has some problem. The USB2.0 and 3.0 is go though different line so if USB3.0 line has problem. USB2.0 line can work also."
Where can i check this USB3.0 wire? Is there a photograph you could provide pointing it out? If it is the problem, could I get one somewhere and have it shipped to me? I have checked the ribbon cables (white and brown) and re-seated them but that doesn't help.
Thanks for any information you can provide in sorting this out.

While I am not certain I fully understand why, the camera has started to work. After much reading, it was suggested that it was better to place isochronous devices in one of the first 3 ports on a 7 port USB 3 hub. I moved the QHY163M into the first port of the hub and it has been working very reliably ever since. I did try to use the camera connected directly to one of the USB 3 ports on my PC but it did not work well there at all. I suppose the supplemental power provided by the hub made the difference. It seems that using a powered USB 3 hub along with fewer hops to the root hub of the PC because of relocating it to the first port is what is required to get this working.

Hello,
I suggest you to update the QHYCCD SDK on 2019.11.15 or later (2020.2.3 is ok but it has a bug cause when camera run on  live video mode 16bit when usb traffic is very small image may misalignment in some models, we are fixing it).

If still has hang issue. You can ask a remotely assistant , our technical support will analyze the issue.

Best regards,

Yes, I am still having consistent issues with hanging downloads. I would like to set something up for assistance. I would need some advance notice so I can set up my imaging gear before the session. Thanks.

Just to give you some more information as to what I have tried:

Replaced USB3 cables with new ones (twice)
Tried using USB2 cables (twice)
Disconnected filter wheel completely
Several different USB3 powered hubs
Three different power supplies (Currently using a powerwerx 30A with grounded plug)
Updated firmware/software and SDK
Different Software Acquisition Packages (SGP,SharpCap, EZCAP_QT, N.I.N.A., Voyager)
Mini PC's, Laptops, and Indoor desktop PC via USB3 active repeater cable.
Used camera on its own hub and also direct connect to PC or Laptop via USB2 and USB3
Re-seated Ribbon cables per your instructions (This seemed to work at first but the problem came back the next use. I also tried taping the cable down per your instructions.)

It seems that if I connect all of my gear and while the camera is connected and powered up, I can disconnect and then reconnect the USB3 cable from the rear of the camera and it will work for some time. This almost always seems to help. However, it is not reliable as to how long it will continue to work.

If you need remote troubleshooting, you can contact my email (cha@qhyccd.com). I want to make sure that the camera hangs only when you use a USB hub?

Thanks I will send you an email. The camera download hangs with or without USB hub. I tested again this morning plugging the camera directly into the usb port of the pc and the 2nd frame hung. As a matter of fact, the camera usually doesn't download at all without using a powered hub.

OK, then you may need to check the SDK version in your software. Have you tried to update the SDK of QHYCCD?

I sent an email two days ago responding to this. Please read my above post which explains what I have already tried to do to fix this issue. (The SDK update was among them.) While unplugging the USB cable from the back of the camera as a required step to get the camera to work will "usually" get things working, I would like to know if this is how this is supposed to work and, if so, what causes this? Very frustrating...
