Title: QHY163 + QHYCFW2 Canon/Nikon Lens Kit
Post by: QiuHY on January 12, 2017, 03:10:07 am
Hello,

Many people ask us to make the QHY163 + QHYCFW2 with Canon/Nikon lens adapter. Now we have finished it. Here is our solution.

This is a universal kit. It gives the freedom connection method. In this kit , we have designed two connection method.

Method 1:  Big M42 or M54 screw connection

To minimize the distance between QHY163 and the color wheel, First you need to take off the "fast installation ring" of the QHYCFW2-S

Next:  take off the 2inch fast installation adapter on QHY163

Now install the M42 big screw connector onto the QHY163.

Now there is a M42 female screw on the QHY163. Just screw camera into the QHYCFW2-S

With this setup. The back focus of QHY163 sensor to the QHYCFW2-S front surface is about 26.5mm

In this condition. The front to nikon/canon lens should be 20mm or 17.5mm

Due to camera and colorwheel connect by M42 screw. The disadvantage is the camera orientation may not just be zero degree or 90 degree for the center line of the color wheel

Here is another connector in this kit, called small screw connector. This connector use four M3 screw to connect the camera and colorwheel.

This is the small screw connector

Install this adapter on QHY163  Please note there is some glue for the air proof of the heat board. There is a slot on the small screw connector . You should find the correct direction to install it.

To connect the camera with the colorwheel. You need take the disk off and install four M3 screw. Here is the installed setup . The advantage is the camera sensor orientation is in the symmetrical position and also the screw connection is very solid. The disadvantage is that you camera is connected with QHYCFW2 by screws and you need open the QHYCFW2 to install/uninstall the camera.

The back focus length to the QHYCFW2-S front position is 26mm in this setup.

Summary:

QHY163M+QHYCFW2-S with big screw connector.  BFL=26.5MM
QHY163M+QHYCFW2-S with small screw connector: BFL=26MM

And for the QHYCFW2-M-US:

QHY163M+QHYCFW2-M-US with big screw connector.      BFL=27.5mm
QHY163M+QHYCFW2-M-US with small screw connector.   BFL=25.5mm

Hello Qui,

Nice!

Maybe these adaptors will also allow for the use of 1.25" filters with less vigneting?

When will these be available on dealers?

Thanks

Thanks

Depent on the opening size and F number.

Most 1.25inch filter is 26mm opening diameter, And the QHY163M diameter is 22.5mm. So when F number not so short it should be ok. You can make drawing to see if there is vignetting of your F#

Here is a picture to show this setup with 1.25inch filter

Thank you Qiu,

I mostly use a 200mm f/4 newtonian (stopped down to 175mm f/4.6) and also an SW ED80 with 0.8X reducer, so maybe I'll get away with at least the ED80 :)

One thing I found with my Astronomik 1.252 filters is that the actual clear apperture is only 24.5mm...but I disassembled the filters from the cell and measured a full 26mm, so I found a way to assemble the filters at this full apperture on my 1.25" filter wheel :)

Having this adaptor would be even better though, so I'll place an order with my dealer.

Cheers,

Besides the two connector, we have prepared the spacer for the lens adapter kit.

This spacer is very userful. It has 0.5mm, 1mm, 2mm, 3mm, 7mm spacer. With you can get the length from +0.5mm to +13.5mm each 0.5mm step. (0.5,1,1.5,2,2.5.......13.5mm) This is used for fit any lens back focus. This spacer is very solid and flat.

What are sensor to front FW (for S and M versio) distances with short adapter (that which is connected to FW via four M3 screws)?

Do you mean the original adapter? It should be :

QHY163M+QHYCFW2-M-US=36mm
QHY163M+QHYCFW2-M-SR=41mm
QHY163M+QHYCFW2-S =37mm

This is the BFL of this new kit:

QHY163M+QHYCFW2-S with big screw connector.  BFL=26.5MM
QHY163M+QHYCFW2-S with small screw connector: BFL=26MM

And for the QHYCFW2-M-US:

QHY163M+QHYCFW2-M-US with big screw connector.      BFL=27.5mm
QHY163M+QHYCFW2-M-US with small screw connector.   BFL=25.5mm

So the new kit is reduced up to 10mm to compare with original one.

And we will includes the 10mm-11mm thickness nikon/canon adapter into this kit like this:

Hi Qiu

You did not explicitly mention this in your previous post, but do these adapters also work with

Extrapolating from your provided measurements
QHY163M + QHYCFW2-M-US with small screw connector: BFL=25.5mm

SR should be OK
QHY163M + QHYCFW2-M-SR with small screw connector: BFL=30.0mm

but together with OAG we would be in the 54mm range?
+ OAG-M is 13mm with connector
+ 10-11mm from Canon adapter

Am I missing something, or if this would be true then OAG would also not work with Ultra Small filter wheel?

To put it more simple, my assumption is:
- both QHYCFW2-M-SR and -US will work without OAG
- neither will work with OAG

And any hints on availabilty yet :-)

Best
H

Hello,
Yes the OAG will add extra 10-13mm for the system. And for the 10mm NIKON/CANON adapter , the total length is 20mm. Looks it is hardly to use the OAG together with this setup. But to consider the lens has short focal .So maybe a miniGuideScope is good for that.

Hello Qiu,

I found this accessory for QHY21 22 23 on taobao.com. Here is link: https://world.taobao.com/item/537334146511.htm?spm=a312a.7700714.0.0.yPKRkQ#detail

It has a screw connector, looks very similar to your small screw connector using in Reply #5 (or Method 2). So, are they the same? Can I use this to connect QHY163M and QHYCFW2 by screws?

Hello,

They are very similar. This is done by the another factory but I think you can use this also.

Tks Qiu. I live in Vietnam, so I can only buy QHY Products through our dealer on taobao. I did not find any "Big M42/M54 screw connection" or "Small screw connector" (which made by QHY) for my CFW2. Did QHY sell these accessories on taobao?

I'm a little confused by all the numbers in this thread.  What I would like to know is with the "big screw" connector attached to the camera, what is the back focal distance from the face of the new adapter to the sensor?  (without the filter wheel).

Now install the M42 big screw connector onto the QHY163.

Hi,

What is the new back focus of the QHY163 with this new ring? I am interesting in reducing the total backfocus of the camera to couple it with my Takahashi Epsilon 160 (55mm backfocus) and my Starlight xpress filter wheel.

One nice thing about the SX fuilterwheel is that they sell all kind of adapter rings so you can screw the FW directly to the reducers without adding extra steps rings.

Anyway, I hope the QHY163 backfocus could be reduced to 13.5 or 14 mm of backfocus, that would be fantastic!

Cheers,

Jose

I received a QHY163 with the M42 "big screw connector" last week.  As near as I can tell, the total backfocus from the face of the new adapter to the sensor is 13mm.

How Joel,

Thanks for your reply! The big screw connector is T-thread female?

No, the threads are male thread (threads on the outside).

No, the threads are male thread (threads on the outside).

Thanks! That's another nice feature of the SX Filterwheel you can change the connectors to Male/Female easily.

One last question, Where did you buy the "connector"?

Regards,

Jose

What do you mean by "Connector"?   I bought the new low profile adapter directly from QHY.  These adapters were just made in the last few weeks.

Hi,

I am interested to buy the QHY163M with the standard medium size filter wheel for 2 inch filters to be attached to Nikon F mount lens 300mm f2.8 and 600mm f4. I saw the parts list on the webpage to do so. Would like to confirm which setup will work for these 2 lens, parts needed and where to buy those parts. One of question is can we control aperture in this setup?

Thanks

What are the part numbers for the 0.5 and 1mm spacers? The 163M Page has a table of various configurations with links to drawings, but there are no dimensions to know which I would need.

I'm not sure you can buy the spacers individually, I think you need to buy the kit which is part no. 020087 and contains all the spacers, the front plate and 3 screws. The screws secure the front plate and spacers to the filter wheel and the front plate has a female M54 thread so e.g. the Canon or Nikon lens adapter can be screwed into it.

Sorry, my reply was incorrect. The 020087 kit is all the spacers but the front plate is separate, part no. 020070.
